This weekend I had a chance to meet and interview Devoya Mayo at her new tribute series at Palomino's in the Tower District. Ms. Soulflower put together an awesome tribute show to Wu-Tang Clan on Friday and plans to have a show every second Friday of every month for as long as possible. In this interview, she talks about her pick for January's tribute and the whole idea behind the show. Devoya Mayo will have this show at Palomino's every time. The idea behind the show is two-fold: Take hip hop artists and the songs they sample, and mix it all together so people can get a sense of not only the new good stuff, but the old good stuff that laid the foundation for it; and second, to expose people to rhythm and soul artists that they may not have heard about so she can help support them as they rise in the industry. Next month, for instance, Mayo said she's going to have a tribute show for Raphael Saadiq, who recently went solo after years of working with other artists everyone's heard about. He opens up for John Legend too. She said she'll also have a show dedicated to the musical stylings of Prince, so look out for that too. Here's the interview: Some apologies I want to make about this video, while I'm at it:
